Do You Ever Talk to Yourself?

The Pick Me Up is a Monday morning newsletter filled with advice, personal stories, and tips to help you get out of bed and jumpstart your week.

Greetings, friend! It’s me, Jen Glantz. I’m writing to you from my couch in Brooklyn. It feels comfy to be back home.

My apartment has a strong and sweet odor that’s hard to ignore. I abandoned it for over a month. It greeted me with me dust, as if to say:

All of your stuff has been waiting for you.

But I make everything so personal. So I took it as:

All of the problems that you left behind, are also here, waiting for you too.

In this issue: Talking to yourself out loud, a question to ask a person when there’s awkward silence, and gifts…for everyone.

Why you’re getting this: I'm Jen Glantz and this is The Pick-Me-Up newsletter. I've been sending it every Monday, for 8-years, to thousands of awesome humans, just like you. Thank you for letting this email live in in your inbox. It truly makes my heart explode with joy.

🍪: A great question to ask a person, when you run out of things to talk about, is:

“What’s something weird or unusual you did early on in life?”

We don’t know the details about the early years of someone’s lives unless we ask them, or they randomly tell us. But those years should never be forgotten.

📚: I adore Bethenny Frankel as a female entrepreneur. Sure, she started as the star of a reality show, but she transformed that attention into multi-million dollar brands and companies. Right now, reading her business advice book like it’s a textbook and learning more than I have in a while.

🎧: When I’m not in the mood for a wild and long workout, but I need to move my body, I press play on videos like these. You don’t need workout equipment, you don’t need a towel, you just need to get up and start moving when the instructor tells you to. After just 5-mins I feel refreshed and accomplished.

Do You Ever Talk to Yourself?

My favorite hobby is going for long walks…

…and talking out loud to myself.

I have full convos while I walk down Manhattan avenues and I recite poems that don’t make any sense as I wait for the cross-town buss.

Recently, I wondered what the heck I actually say when I do this so I started recording myself and playing it back.

Here are three of things that came out of my mouth this past week, while I was talking to myself.

#1: Stubborn souls needs to let things go.
You don’t have to hold a grudge against everyone who wronged you. You don’t have to stay mad at someone just to make a point. You can simply say: Please don’t do that again. Let’s move on. And then give yourself a hug as the emotions of it all gargle inside your throat.

#2: Don’t take a simple question for granted.

You know when someone asks you about how you are or how everything is going in your life? I never take for granted being able to say, “everything is pretty good”. Because I remember the times when everything was not pretty good. Everything was mostly awful and that question made my skin crawl. When things in life are good, I don’t let a day go by that I don’t pause and recognize that about my life.

#3: Spending a lot of money on gifts doesn’t equate to how much you love.

You spend way too much money on gifts for people because you think that’s how you can show love. But you can’t put feelings inside wrapping paper. How you feel about a person shouldn’t come with credit card debt.

So stop doing that. Buy one thing for each person. Make sure it’s something you can afford. Then take a piece of paper and write them a letter. That will forever mean more than a pile of gadgets and trinkets that cost more than they should.

I’ll be back next week with a new Monday Pick-Me-Up. Until then, I leave you with this:

My mantra of the week is: Take the nap if you need the nap.

Even if it’s 10-minutes long. But perhaps, make it 30-mins if you can. Don’t tell anyone about it. Don’t apologize for it. Rest your eyes, your heart, your brain, and your soul.

Until next Monday, I'll be cheering you on! Have an epic week.
