The Pick Me Up is a Monday morning newsletter filled with advice, personal stories, and tips to help you get out of bed and jumpstart your week.
Greetings, friend! It’s me, Jen Glantz. I’m writing this to you from a tiny little desk I’ve set up for myself in the corner of my Brooklyn apartment.
My life has been a bit different these days. More on that here.
But even during my sleepy midnight stumbles, I try to remind myself that life is all about change. But with change comes pain. Yet, once the change becomes our new normal, the pain sneaks out the back door. We never see it again.
So I’m in this change, change, change part of my life. Every part of me hurts. But one day, it won’t anymore and I won’t remember how this time in my life felt.
The moments I want to lean back and cry, I do. But then I find a way to smile.
Everything in life, my dear friend, is temporary.
In this issue: How to know yourself better than anyone else knows you, some good reads, odd jobs, and everything in-between.
Why you’re getting this: I'm Jen Glantz and this is The Pick-Me-Up newsletter. I've been sending it every Monday, for 8-years, to thousands of awesome humans, just like you. Thank you for letting this email live in in your inbox. It truly makes my heart explode with joy.
Instant Pick Me Ups
🍪: When you're in a funk, do something that’s sooooo you. If you’re not sure what that is, text a few friends and say:
What’s something that’s soooo me?
I did that this week and my friends said:
-Eat pizza
-Dance in your living room
-Go on walk and end up in a random store that you fall in love with.
Guess what. I did all of these things yesterday. It brought me back to life again.
Your turn.
📚: I love this author so much. I had her on as a podcast guest a few years ago because I adored her poetry. Her debut novel comes out today. I was able to get an advanced copy and I read it during my final days of pregnancy. It’s incredible, deep, personal, and makes you want to read it all at once, and then read it again.
🎧: The name of this playlist is a bit odd but I love their playlists and am seeing them in concert soon.
Know Yourself Better Than Anyone Else Knows You
One of the biggest goals I continue to work on is this:
I want to know myself better than anyone else thinks they know me.
That way, when I walk into a room, the confidence that enters with me is genuine, authentic, and is sparked by all that I am, and not all that I’m scared of.
I want to be able to see myself on a down day and know what picks JEN GLANTZ up.
I want to be able to enter a conversation where someone asks me to share who I am, or what I do, and not start off with the word “ummm” or “it’s complicated”.
I don’t want to feel like the main character in a mystery book while I’m living the days of my own life.
I’m working on this in every part of my life.
Here’s how.
#1: Personal Branding
I’m a big believer in having a personal brand. People think you only need this if you’re an influencer but everyone needs this. The work you put into your personal brand helps you understand who you are, what your unique value is, and how the people in your life view you.
Once you have this information, you can figure out what you want to do with it - whether it’s create a website for yourself, update your bio, re-do your elevator pitch, or go after new opportunities now that you understand yourself.
I made a course about this but I also take my own course 2x a year because who I am changes, constantly, and so my brand always needs to be updated.
Once I’m done with the course, I update my website, my IG bio, and even feel better about how I talk about myself when I’m in conversations and people ask me questions.
#2: Being Open and Honest
To know yourself well, you need to know what you like and what you don’t like - before someone asks you.
When is the last time you sat down and wrote out lists of things that you adore and things that you don’t like? Have you ever wrote down boundaries that you have for your career, relationships, and life in general? Do you carry around a list of big goals you want to achieve in your life?
I don’t have all of this. But I’m working on these lists.
#3: Tell Other People Who You Are
Sometimes old friendships can be a bit awkward because the people you knew, ages ago, still think of you as that person, from ages ago.
When I’m with friends who have known me forever, I often say things like:
“I’ve become a person who..”
“I’m now someone who…”
“I used to be like this but now I’m ___.”
It helps reframe who you are to them and moves their thoughts away from the person you were in college to person you are now.
All my love,
